Hi Alex,
I am just finishing building a small solar passive home (that I have designed and built with my own hands). It is constructed from straw bale and clay render, with double glazed windows. It should last for more than 100 years easily (as long as the roof is maintained).
We have been testing the thermal efficiency of the building and it looks like it will required NO active heating and NO active cooling. At all, even in the middle of winter or summer.
And the best part: it is only costing AUD $35,000 total.
Solar passive design is not magic, or even difficult, and definitely does not need to be expensive.
